Here’s why this gets worse with heat: brake components expand as they warm up. After 45 minutes of driving, your brake system is operating at full temperature. The rubber seals inside the caliper harden under heat, making it harder for the piston to move freely. In some cases, the metal components themselves expand just enough to prevent proper retraction. The result is one wheel dragging slightly against the rotor even when you’re not braking, creating friction, heat, and that distinctive burning smell.

Why the Behavior Seems Inconsistent

You mentioned it doesn’t always happen, which is typical for this issue. Caliper sticking often fluctuates—sometimes the stuck piston frees up, sometimes it doesn’t, depending on road conditions, how hard you’ve been braking, and ambient temperature. This inconsistency is exactly what makes people think it’s electrical, but it’s actually just the nature of a partially stuck brake.

How to Diagnose a Sticking Caliper

After a drive where you felt the shimmy, immediately—and carefully—check your wheel temperatures. A sticking caliper will leave one wheel noticeably hotter than the others. You can usually tell just by cautiously holding your hand near (not touching) the wheel. If the right front wheel is dramatically hotter than the left front, you’ve found your problem.

Also note which wheel seems to correspond to the shimmy. If the vibration is worst when turning or accelerating in a particular direction, that’s another clue pointing to one specific wheel.

Other Causes to Rule Out

Brake calipers account for the majority of these cases, but they’re not the only possibility.

  • Warped brake rotors cause uneven pad contact and steering wheel shake, especially under braking. If your rotors have warped from heat cycling or hard braking, they won’t be perfectly flat anymore, so the pads grip unevenly.
  • Wheel balance problems can create steering shake at specific speeds, and the issue often gets worse as tires wear unevenly (a pattern called cupping). If your front wheels are out of balance, you’ll feel it in the wheel at highway speeds.
  • Front-end wear in ball joints, tie rods, or control arms can introduce play that creates vibration, though this usually shows up more constantly rather than only when warm.

Next Steps

Get under the car (safely on a lift) or take it to a shop where a tech can visually inspect the brake calipers for leaking fluid, dust buildup, or corrosion on the guide pins—all signs of caliper problems. A visual inspection is free or nearly free, and it will either confirm the diagnosis or point you toward wheel balance or suspension work instead.

Do not ignore this. A dragging brake can generate enough heat to warp the rotor and damage brake fluid, and in extreme cases, can reduce your braking power on that corner. It also wastes energy and reduces EV efficiency.
