The Good News First: Transit Engines Beat Your Old 5.4

If you owned that 5.4 3-valve, you already know the bar is low. Ford’s Transit platforms use completely different engine lineups, and the result is night and day in terms of durability. The Transits offered for 2024 are engineered for commercial use, which means they’re built to survive neglect and heavy load cycles.

Your Engine Options and What They Mean

The 2024 Transit 250 comes in two primary configurations:

  • 3.7L V6 Cyclone (naturally aspirated): 275 hp, 262 lb-ft torque. This is the simple, durable choice. No turbos, no intercoolers. It trades raw power for longevity and reliability. With routine maintenance, the 3.7 is good for well over 200,000 miles.
  • 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (turbocharged): 310 hp, 400 lb-ft torque. More powerful, but requires strict oil change intervals (5,000 miles maximum). Turbos need good oil to survive. It’s reliable if you maintain it religiously, but it’s less forgiving than the Cyclone.

If the vehicle you’re looking at has the naturally aspirated 3.7L, you’re choosing the more robust engine. If it’s the EcoBoost, it’s still solid, but budget for closer maintenance intervals and accept that you can’t skip services.

The Real Concern: Carrier Bearing Failure on Long-Wheelbase Models

Here’s what you actually need to watch for on an LWB Transit 250: carrier bearing failure. This is the Achilles heel of long-wheelbase models with two-piece driveshafts.

The center support bearing (carrier bearing) sits between the two driveshaft sections. The rubber isolator deteriorates over time, and the bearing itself wears. When it fails, you’ll notice vibrations at highway speeds—typically between 50 and 70 mph—and a clunking sound when shifting between Drive and Reverse. It sounds ominous but isn’t an engine problem.

The failure accelerates if the van regularly carries heavy loads near its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). This is why contractor vans and work trucks tend to see this sooner. If you’re planning to use this van for daily payload work, the carrier bearing is something to inspect before buying and budget for eventual replacement.

Other Known Transit Weak Points

Beyond the carrier bearing:

  • Oil pan drain plug: Ford’s aluminum oil pan is prone to stripped threads, especially if serviced at quick-lube shops. Use a proper shop and torque the plug correctly.
  • Roof leaks: The most commonly reported issue is water intrusion around the roof seams. Check the ceiling carefully during your pre-purchase inspection.
  • Tire wear: Uneven wear on front tires is common, particularly edge wear. Alignment drift and worn suspension bushings contribute. Budget for more frequent tire rotations.
  • Rear axle seals (RWD models): Some units develop weeping gear oil seals at the differential. This isn’t catastrophic but needs attention.

What 150,000 Miles Actually Means

Your expectation of 150,000 miles is unnecessarily conservative. Ford Transit vans regularly hit 250,000 to 300,000+ miles with proper maintenance. That’s 2.5 to 3 times what you’re expecting. The 2018–2021 model years earned the reputation as most reliable, but 2024 models aren’t showing systemic problems yet—mostly normal early-run quirks and a fair number of recalls (11 total), none catastrophic.

The 2024 does have more electronics and complexity than older Transits, which means some teething issues, but nothing structural.

Before You Buy

Get a pre-purchase inspection from someone who works on Transits regularly. Specifically ask them to:

  • Check for play in the driveshaft and listen for carrier bearing noise
  • Inspect roof seams and inside ceiling for water stains
  • Check oil pan condition and drain plug integrity
  • Review service history for oil change intervals
  • Test alignment (pull to either side?)

If the van you’re looking at is a work truck that’s been loaded hard for a year or two, the carrier bearing check is the most important item.

The Honest Take

The Transit 250 is a sensible commercial vehicle. The engines—especially the 3.7L Cyclone—are proven. It won’t have the catastrophic flaws your 5.4 did. It will, however, need regular maintenance, and it may develop annoying rather than catastrophic issues (roof leaks, tire wear, bearing wear). None of these are dealbreakers if you stay ahead of service schedules and have realistic expectations about a work vehicle.

A well-maintained Transit can easily surpass 200,000 miles. Your conservative estimate of 150,000 gives you real margin.
